Remember when I told you I had some news about a month ago and that I’d share it with you all today? Well, I’m not going to be able to share that news today. Something magical happened over the weekend, and I thought I’d share that with you instead. I hope you understand.

Kyle and I had our first official date. Neither of us was into the whole “let’s grab drinks” thing, so I suggested we grab a coffee and take a walk instead. We met up at Freedom Park on the most beautiful spring night. We walked with each other for hours talking about everything and got so distracted in conversation that we somehow got a bit lost (ok, a lot lost.) We finally found our way back to the park but were greeted with the locked park gates. We had just missed the closing hours, which meant that Kyle’s car was locked into the park. I guess it wasn’t in our cards to end the night there. I had parked on the side street, so we hopped into my car and headed to his place where he made me dinner, and we watched Hope Floats until we both drifted off to sleep. I knew from that moment that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with Kyle. I had never felt a connection so deep with someone, and I never wanted that feeling to go away. Lucky for me, Kyle felt the same way. Even though so much time has passed since our first walk in the park, I still feel the butterflies when he walks into a room, and my love for him is so deep that I have a hard time putting into words. Our relationship has always been easy, and I cherish the strong bond we have created. Time never faded the love letters we write or the number of laughs we have. I love him more than anything in this world, and that night at Freedom Park was one of the best days of my life.
Grumples met Kyle the next week. If you know my dog, you know he has a bit of an attitude problem. He growls and protects me from anyone new, but he didn’t do that with Kyle. I warned Kyle about Grumple’s temper and prepared him for the proper way to approach him. When Kyle came into my apartment the following Saturday, Grumples ran up to him, wagging his tail, and they both sat on my kitchen floor while Kyle rubbed his belly for a good hour. I stood there, dumbfounded. After overcoming the shock of what just happened, I felt good knowing that Kyle was Grumples approved. A girl’s dog’s approval is a big one.
The following week, my parents met Kyle. We headed to my favorite restaurant, the Garden Cafe. That night, my parents fell just as hard in love with Kyle as me. My brother met him the following New Year’s and approved within the first five seconds. I mean, they were even wearing the same outfit.
Months later, I met his Dad, and then met his mom, and it clicked why Kyle was such a perfect man. His mom is the sweetest, most creative, and outgoing mom on the planet. I love her and hope to be 1/4th of the mom she is one day. My favorite thing to do is sit on the couch in the morning with coffee and chat with her for hours. If you let us, we could talk for 24-hours straight. His dad is hardworking, has a great sense of humor, and I see so much of his personality in Kyle. And if I had to describe his sister in one word, I’d say badass. Not only is she drop-dead gorgeous, but she’s so sweet, and I know Kyle really looks up to her and values her advice. I fell in love with Kyle’s family.
Over time, I fell in love with his friends, and my friends fell in love with him. Caitlin jokes with me that I created Kyle from a boyfriend machine because he’s truly one of a kind.
We went skydiving, took a lot of weekend trips, adopted Leo, watched a lot of Netflix series, cooked a lot of food, and continued to make the best memories with each other.
3 and a half years later…
I was out of town, celebrating my best friend’s bachelorette party in Miami. Kyle was supposed to be attending his boss’s work picnic that afternoon, but they rescheduled when the skies looked cloudy. Kyle decided to bring the dogs over to my parent’s house to hang out by the pool, play some backyard games with my dad, and even went out for ice cream. It was nothing out of the ordinary because Kyle loves hanging out there, and he also gets crazy cravings for ice cream out of nowhere. And if anyone loves ice cream as much as Kyle, it’s my dad
Kyle asked my dad for my hand in marriage over ice cream cones. My dad shed a few tears, said a few sweet words, and then immediately started cracking out the dad jokes to recover from his emotional moment.
My mom avoided me all week. I’m assuming it’s because she can’t keep secrets from me. I knew everything I was getting for Christmas months before.
A week goes by, and it’s Saturday morning.
I’m exhausted from catching up on work all week. I woke up at 4:30 am so I could edit a blog and video from my refurbish project the day before. I wanted to spend my morning drinking coffee in my cozy pajamas and relax before it was time to go to Kyle’s work picnic. Kyle said his company had rented out one of the pavilions at Freedom park, and it made sense to me since a man he works with lives nearby. The weather was 80-degrees, and there wasn’t a drop of humidity or cloud in the sky. It was honestly one of the best days for a picnic. When I asked Kyle what he was going to wear, he said probably something he’d wear to work since it’s with his colleagues. Again, it made sense to me. I decided to pull out my favorite go-to red dress because it’s the most comfortable dress I own, and after I tried it on, Kyle said: “yes, I love that dress, please wear it.” Kyle always compliments me, so again, nothing out of the ordinary. Kyle accepted a new job a few months ago, and since this was my first time meeting the people he worked with, I wanted to look a little more put together. I wasn’t going to get away with yoga pants at this picnic. I took the time to curl my hair, put on makeup, and I even managed to paint my nails in the car on the way to the park.
There was a huge festival going on in the park. It was hard to find parking, so we ended up creating our own parking spot by the tennis courts. It was a bit of a walk to the pavilion. Luckily, the weather was incredible, and the breezy walk felt nice. Kyle said he wasn’t sure where they were holding the picnic, and if you’ve ever been to Freedom Park, you know it’s a big one to navigate. I told him that I’m very familiar with the park since I’ve run it a hundred times and I could show him where the pavilions were. Kyle was so set on telling me that it’s in a different location. I was starting to get a little frustrated after pointing Kyle to the visual Pavillion right across the park. He insisted that it was up the hill. I was almost 100% sure that it was a parking lot with a building and no Pavillion up the hill. There were a ton of people in the parking lot, so I thought they had maybe rented a big party tent since they had to change the date of the picnic last minute. And with the festival in the park, I figured it was hard for them to find space, so I just went with it. He was texting his boss for directions, so I let him take the reigns on this one. I put my stubbornness on hold for a bit.
As we were walking up the steep hill, he pulled me close and said to me, “what if I were to tell you that there wasn’t really a work picnic.”
Why wouldn’t there be a picnic? I asked. Before he could answer, he pulled me to the left where I was greeted with a long path of white rose petals leading to a giant heart of pink rose petals. I caught the eye of a photographer, lost my breath for a second, and went into complete shock. It was only five seconds ago that I thought we were going to a work picnic and I was going to meet everyone he works with. How did he do this? How did I not pick up on any of this? He held my hand and led me to a giant heart made from pink rose petals. 
There we were standing in the park where we had our first date, my hands were shaking, and I was holding back every ugly cry that wanted to be let out. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was speechless for the first time in my entire life, but still managed to let out out the word “YES.” I nodded my head just in case.
I was still in a bit of shock and trying to process everything that just happened. We stood there holding each other as I finally let those tears flow. I couldn’t believe he pulled this off. How? He told me he spent weeks meeting up with the photographer and the florist to find the perfect spot in the park to bring this magical moment to life. They even added Gerber Daisies to the bushes behind us to add more color since he knows I love colorful things. The thought out details and time put into this moment made every second so magical. He even had a photographer there capturing the entire moment.
After experiencing the most incredible moment of my life, we made our way back to the car and headed uptown to see Aladin at the Belk theater. I was happy that Aladin was still a part of the plan, unlike the work picnic. It ended up being one of the most amazing shows, and we had seats right by the stage. I felt like I was floating on a cloud all day.
Kyle surprised me with reservations at my favorite place on earth, The Garden Cafe. This spot is magical, romantic, and such a gem in the small town of York. This picturesque restaurant could never be replicated. My parent’s met us there, just like at the beginning of our love story. Kyle thought of every single detail that would make my day the best day of my life. We celebrated with a bottle of champagne, and I finally had the chance to order some food since there was never really a work picnic…
Many of you have been with me for the past ten years, and I’m just so excited that I get to share this moment with you. Life is changing, and I can’t wait to take you with me on this next chapter of life. It’s safe to say that I’m just as shocked as you guys.
