Hi, Everyone!
Happy Memorial Day weekend! I hope you are all having a blast, but also taking the time to remember the people who have died while serving and fighting for our freedom. God Bless our troops!
I am spending the weekend catching up on work, sleep (hello, jetlag), and enjoying the beautiful weather by going on walks and reading outside. I have received a lot of request for another fitness challenge. I’ve been a little hesitant because I’m trying to lighten up my workouts and go easy on my body for a while, but I still wanted to do something. I have personally decided to stick to long walks and light workouts for the next month, and I’d love for you guys to join me! I have set a goal to walk 150 miles in June. That is an easy 5 miles a day! It’s not hard to fit in five miles if you’re tracking your steps during the day, walking half in the morning, walking half at night, and trying to get on your feet as much as possible. Walking is much easier on the joints and muscles, so I am still not running in June. There is no reason to rush back into it after an injury, and I don’t need to train until fall. I will get back into running in July.
I will be tracking my miles with RunKeeper (per usual) and sharing my miles during my recap posts. I’d love for you to tag me in your walking photos and try to reach 150 miles with me! I think working together to reach our goals makes it so much easier. I will also be keeping track of my progress on the fitness challenge Instagram page.
When I first started losing weight back in 2010, it was only from walking and eating a healthy diet. It goes to show that just a little movement can also make a big impact. My goal isn’t to really lose weight, but it’s to get active, and also be kind to my body. Walking is also good for the mind. I find that I’m always relaxed and refreshed after a long walk, so hopefully, you’ll find it therapeutic as well. Download an awesome playlist, put on sunscreen, and just get out there and go! Find any excuse to walk. Grab coffee and walk with a friend, hike your favorite trail, walk the mall, walk to work/school if you can, and get out there with your pup.
I’m a BIG believer in walking for health, and I hope you join me! I look forward to seeing your posts and inspiration. A buddy system is also great! Becca is also doing the challenge, and we are going to walk twice a week together + hold eachother accountable! This is such an easy challenge that you can do anywhere, and I’m excited to hit my goal! If I can’t walk the milage one day, I’ll just pile it onto another day!
If I can get at least twenty readers to reach the 150-mile goal, which is 3000 miles, I will send twenty surprise boxes out to each one of the goal crushers! I’m hoping that we can hit 10,000 miles together! It’s OK if you don’t hit 150 miles, any miles will contribute to the 10,000 mile goal. Your running miles also count! Just because I’m not running doesn’t mean you can’t during the challenge. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #150junewalkingchallenge & tag @simplytaralynnfitchallenge
Questions for you!
- Are you up for the challenge?

I’m already excited for June 1st! xo 🙂

I am so excited for this!! I have lost 40 pounds but recently suffered a back injury and have struggled. I always feel like I need to do more intense workouts to keep losing weight (I have about 50lbs to go). Thank you for making me realize how important it is to be kind to my body and that walking is great exercise. I am so excited for this challenge. My goal is the 150 miles, but most importantly I want to nourish my body with healthy foods and gentle exercise.
Taralynn McNitt says
Woooo! Nice job on your goals.
So sorry to hear about your injury. It sucks 🙁 I love that you’re going to be kind to your body and nourish it + be gentle! Makes me happy to see 🙂 I will do the same! xo
Ashton Jury says
Hooray! I love when you do the fitness challenges, it keeps me motivated, so count me in! Have you heard of the StepBet app? You compete with people, and it averages your daily steps so for example I have to get at least 11k for 4 days of the week then I have 2 stretch days where I need to get a little over 14k and then one day off. The pot is over 1000, and who ever makes it to the end (it could be everyone) you keep the money you put in, but if anyone didn’t complete there bet you get some of theirs too! I think you’d like it, My app syncs with my fitbit but I know it works with the apple watch too I’m not sure about polar.
Taralynn McNitt says
🙂 Glad you’re joining! I definitely have heard of it. I may use it the second time around!
Sounds like a great way to stay motivated for people.
Megan says
Are you up for the challenge?
Totally! I am 4 weeks postpartum and am so ready to get back into walking. I know my Parson Russell Terrier has been anxious to get back to our daily walks and runs.
If you plan on joining me, what are your goals?
I want to get back onto my goal of slimming down and being healthy. I already lost the baby weight from my new daughter, still need to lose the weight from my first daughter and keep going to being a healthier me! I have two girls now. Valorie is 4 weeks old and Mayla is 2.5.
How do you plan on fitting in 5 miles a day?
Definitely going to be tracking it on my FitBit, first of all. I’ll probably split it up throughout the day. Steadily take the girls outwith the stroller for longer walks and/or the dog. I already walk 2.5 miles consistently, so it’ll just be a matter of amping it up.
Taralynn McNitt says
Yay! So glad you’re joining!
Walks is so perfect for a gentle way to get back into fitness!
Congrats on your babies too:) How exciting. Family walks would help!
Splitting it up will be easy with your fit bit! I can’t wait to follow your progress! xo xo
Sarah says
I’m in!! I am currently studying for my medical licensing board exam and have been SO unmotivated to do intense workouts that leave me exhausted, but walking sounds perfect so I am in 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Walking so good for taking a break from studying! You will probably find it easier to focus after a walk! xo
Nicole says
Are you up for the challenge?
-Yes! I was excited to see an activity challenge. I am in a rut at the gym and I needed some motivation to keep up my activity levels.
If you plan on joining me, what are your goals?
-I plan on completing the 150 miles! It seems like a big number but I think it is definitely obtainable.
How do you plan on fitting in 5 miles a day?
-Looking for some new hiking paths or even heading down to walk on the canal. Try to mix things up a bit!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is awesome, Nicole! Glad you’re joining.
It does seem big, but it’s not running, so it’s GREAT for the body. Some people do more walking than that during their jobs. It’s crazy.
Changing things up is great! 🙂
Nicole says
I’m on board with this! I’m currently doing about 2 miles a day so this will be a big jump for me. But totally do-able!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is awesome, Nicole!! 🙂 Maybe 2.5 in the morning and 2.5 in the evening! xo
Hillary Danielle says
I am DEFINITELY up for this challenge! At work for May we’re currently doing a 100 mile May challenge and I’ve already crushed that goal, so I’m excited to push it to 150 and see if I can do it!
My overall goal is to make sure I’m getting active each and every day. I’ve been slacking in a major way and my body can tell.
I plan to get my 5 miles in by running and walking. I want to utilize my lunch breaks at work to keep active and help get those miles in!
I can’t wait for this to start!
Taralynn McNitt says
YAY! Glad you’re joining in.
It’ll be cool to see how you do with the 150 in comparison with the 100!
Glad you fit it in during lunch.
😀 I’m excited for June too!! Something to look forward to every morning/evening!
Trish says
I’m in! my goal is to be nice to my body as well.
Taralynn McNitt says
Great!!:)
Valerie says
I’ve tried so many workouts but I can never stick to it consistently and make a lifestyle out of it. I’m excited to join in on this challenge with you! I’m hoping to gain some traction and motivation through this challenge. I’m going to walk on my treadmill in the mornings for a few miles then take the dogs out in the evenings to finish it up! They’ll be very appreciative and I know I will be too 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
I love walking so much and I think it’s so relaxing and therapeutic. Your pups will love it too!
Juliette | Namastay Traveling says
Walking is always my favorite form of exercise. It’s so easy to incorporate every day…and not have to make my hair a sweaty mess! Great challenge, excited to see if I can hit five miles each day!
Taralynn McNitt says
Mine too!!! I’m anxious to do it.
Erica says
I’m in! Like you, I have runners knee and also a minor tear in my patella tissue. Walking will be a great compliment to my physical therapy for recovery!
I plan to hit my goal my walking my two-year-old goldendoodle. As you know, they need the exercise!
Taralynn McNitt says
Walking is key to recovery and so is rest! Better than rushing back into running!
lol THEY DEFINITELY need it! I am going to try to wake up EARLY morning and get the five miles in with the boys (doodles)
Nicole says
I’m all in!! I usually do about 3 miles per day…so this will just up my game 🙂 I don’t use Instagram, so I’m hoping to follow you here as well.
Taralynn McNitt says
Wooo!
Jamie says
This is a great idea! I have tried running in the past and my body hates it! I am 100% in! I try to walk during the week on my lunch break to get all the miles in!
Taralynn McNitt says
Running is not for everyone, but I think walking is :):) Using your lunch break for a walk is a great idea!
Sara says
I’m in! I love a challenge!
My goals are to be consistent every day and to get the miles in by either going on a walking path, nature trail, “exploring” cities I’ve never been to (or those I’m familiar with) using the elliptical or treadmill no matter what else is going on or what kind of weather!
Taralynn McNitt says
Woo!! so happy you’re in!!
Those are all great goals.
Jeannette says
I am in for the challenge! My goal is to get out in all types of weather, even if it rains, and work my way into running. I already walk my dog three miles each morning, and plan to the other two in the evening!
I’ve been reading your blog since you started! I enjoy following your journey!
Taralynn McNitt says
Good for you! That’s dedication!
xo xo Thank you for following all these years!
Haley Lynn says
I am down too! I think this is a great idea ? Thank you for always coming up with these ideas! They’re really motivating ??
Taralynn McNitt says
Yay!!! Glad you’re in!
Season L. says
I’m in!!! Pregnant with twin boys and need to keep myself motivated and moving!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Awww congrats!!!!
Clare says
I’m in! As a teacher, I still work a lot over the summer but move MUCH less. I’m excited for this challenge. By the way, I love that you’re doing this without running. I had a stress fracture ankle injury years ago and the only thing that healed it was time. And patience 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
I think this is perfect for all levels of fitness and it’s so relaxing! Excited you’re participating! xo
Amy D says
Count me in! I’ve been seriously lagging woth getting back into running and 150 miles seems like a perfect goal!
Taralynn McNitt says
Woo!!Excited for you to participate!
Laura says
I am definitely on board with this! Being healthy and fit has always been an up and down battle for me. I’m working from the ground up for the 20th time it seems. Looking forward to joining in on this challenge with many others! I think my husband might even be on board with me!
Taralynn McNitt says
Yay!! This is a challenge anyone can do and it’s very easy on the body! That’s why I love it. I’m sure you can get your husband to atleast walk a bit with you 🙂 I’m going to try to get Kyle to do a couple miles with me during the week.
Allison says
I’m going to try it! Won’t be easy but let’s see! @happilyeverafterww
Taralynn McNitt says
You got this! xo
Sarah says
Lovely idea for a challenge! We are in (kiddos + me!) Summer time fun time!
Taralynn McNitt says
So excited for you and the kiddos to join!!
Jessica says
Are you up for the challenge?
Heck ya! Perfect timing!
If you plan on joining me, what are your goals?
To be more active, keep losing weight and hit that 150! I went keto 6 weeks ago since I was low carb/gluten free for months. I’m down 24lbs and have a long journey ahead of me.
How do you plan on fitting in 5 miles a day?
It’s finally getting nice in Minnesota, so I’ll be headed outside to walk around the neighborhood with my son. I’m also going to be paying more attention to my FitBit. I might have to fire up the treadmill! (it’s been working great to hang dry clothes on, haha)
So excited! 😀 Let’s do this everyone!
Taralynn McNitt says
Glad you’re in!!!
AWESOME! I am thinking of eating keto and having been experimenting with it for the past couple of weeks. Glad to see you’ve had progress.
Excited to see your progress!
Jennifer says
I’m so up for the challenge! I’ve actually really been wanting to start “something” steadily and this will be perfect. Working my two jobs leaves me exhausted and this will be perfect to get in a “workout” without feeling too exhausted afterwards!
My goal is to walk everyday. Some days I’m just not feeling it, but if I’m able to get up and walk even just a short distance it will be an accomplishment!
I plan on going for a long walk after work everyday, and if it’s raining use the treadmill. I’m going to try to get 5 miles in but I know it won’t happen everyday because of timing and prior commitments… but I will try! My phone automatically tracks my steps so I plan on keeping it with me wherever I go to track my steps and mileage.
Taralynn McNitt says
Glad you’re in, Jennifer!
Even when I’m so exhausted, a long walk wakes me up and gives me an extra boost of energy.
Even if you don’t walk one day, just add a couple extra miles in the next few days to make up for it 🙂
Cool that your phone tracks your steps! That’ll help and make you more likely to get up off your feet to fit in those miles!
Linda @ the Fitty says
Do you keep it in your back pocket or in for hand?
Clare says
I am ABSOLUTELY in. I want to way up my running in June, and on days I don’t run, I want to make sure I get my 5 miles in by walking 🙂 Do you have an email I can contact you with regarding a PR/media inquiry, as well as personal advice re: running?
Taralynn McNitt says
That is great! Perfect for non-running days!
My emails are all on my sidebar menu 🙂
Linda @ the Fitty says
Has your diet or food intake changed much since your training much less and just walking? I think I might be down for this challenge. I just have to convert 5 miles into kilometers. At first I was worried because I saw 150 miles and I thought oh my gosh that’s so much for a week I can’t even run 20 miles in a week! But then I realized it was for the entire month, and I think that might be doable 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
LOL not in one week, or you’d be walking FOREVER!
My diet really hasnt changed other than I don’t time my meals around my workouts or worry about getting pre and post meals with carbs and protein. I eat pretty normal now.
Linda @ The Fitty says
Must be refreshing to not have to think about that, is it?
Aubrey Miller says
I’ve never done a group fitness challenge, but I’d like to join ya’ll! There’s a treadmill I can use at work on my lunch hour & then I’m going to take my pup, Bentley, for a walk when I get home. I think I can do 150 miles in June.
Taralynn McNitt says
That’s awesome! So cool you have access to a treadmill at work. That’ll make this so much easier to do!
Katie says
I’m in! I would love to hit the 150 miles but I’d be happy if I hit 100. I’ve been super lazy lately so I’m really trying to get active again. I’m currently studying for the bar exam (gotta get that law license) which involves sitting in front of my computer for 8 hours so I’m gonna try and fit in miles when I need a break.
Taralynn McNitt says
ANY mileage is better than none! So awesome you’re working towards that law license! good for you!
Shannon says
I’m definitely up for the challenge! I used to be an avid runner myself , but had to give up when I developed arthritis in my ankle about two years ago. These past couple of weeks I have been doing my own walking challenge in the evenings. My goal was to walk 2-3 miles on the treadmill and to hit 12k steps on my Fitbit. The goal is to help me lose a few lbs to fit in my summer clothes and to make me feel better. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will start some sort of strength routine.
Taralynn McNitt says
Perfect! Glad you’re in.
Those are great goals. Walking can certainly help you reach them without stressing out the body! I like to stretch after long walks.
Tara @ Run and Live Happy says
I’m in!! This is a great challenge and will be so fun!
Taralynn McNitt says
Yay!!!
Jennie says
Me! Me! Me!! This is just what I needed – and sounds so attainable when you break it down into some in the morning, some in the evening, and get on your feet whenever possible.
Thank you for doing another challenge!
So yes! I’ll join you. My goal is to (re) jump start my exercise habit as I’m signed up for a half marathon in October, and I’ll plan on achieving my daily miles just like you recommended.
Looking forward to it!
Taralynn McNitt says
WOO HOO!!!
This is a challenge I’ve already planned on doing, so I thought I’d share it for anyone to join. It’ll hold me accountable too!
Glad you’re in!
Melissa FitzGerald says
I’m more than ready for the challenge! My sister’s getting married in October, and I’ve got a bridesmaid dress to look good in. 😉 This is perfect! My other goals just include cleaning up my diet and hitting the gym five times a week!
My job is about three miles from my apartment, and my gym is a one-mile walk one way. If I go to the gym and then decide to walk to work, there’s my five miles right there! I use my Fitbit tracker to hold me accountable and make sure I’m getting my miles in, too.
Taralynn McNitt says
Yay! 🙂
Great goals!! & congrats to your sister.
That would be an easy way to get your miles in!
Anna says
I’m up for the challenge! My goal is to walk at least the 5 miles every day. I have a blue heeler/border collie mix who NEVER stops moving, so I’m sure she’ll be excited about this 🙂 We are also trying to get her weight down. The vet swears because of her breeds that upping exercise won’t make much of a difference, but I remember you writing about how just adjusting Grumples exercise helped a lot, right? We’ve already discussed her food and that doesn’t seem to be the issue.
Taralynn McNitt says
That is awesome! The pups LOVE walks. Grumples has done so amazing with exercising and walking more! I cut his food only by 1/2 a cup at night. Grumps eats a pretty healthy diet too though! But the walks helped the most.
Emily N says
Hey from China! I am spending my summer studying in Guangxi University and I am down for your challenge! Thank you for being such a wonderful role model as your care for your body in various intuitive ways! I won’t be able to post on my American socially media while I am here, but I will be walking the city and the campus everyday instead of taking public transportation!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is awesome! I’m proud of you for getting out there and staying active! xo
Jennifer says
I’m in, I’ve been over exercising for too long at least 2 intense hours per day. I’m tired and sore and need a break. Have been thinking about switching to walking and adding some yoga. The cardio and weights workouts are getting old.
Taralynn McNitt says
I feel ya! I’m making the SAME changes!!!
Maxi says
I love LOVE love this challenge! I know it’s easy to get focused on working hard (which there’s nothing wrong with), but it’s also important to slow down and do things that you enjoy. Walking is so easy to incorporate in order to get more active. I’m definitely up for the challenge! Recently I’ve started taking really long walks, and I know my best friend and I have been planning some hiking trips in the next few weeks, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get the miles in! 🙂 My main goal is to become more active throughout the day, since I’ve been finding myself resting in bed, on the couch or sitting in a chair far too often than I’d like. So I’m hoping to change that, become more content with my body and do my body some good in the process! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
I totally agree, Maxi!
Sounds like you have all the goals ready to tackle! Excited to see your posts, especially the hiking ones!
Angie says
I am totally interested in the challenge, how do we join?? I try to break up my day with mini walks and take my dog on walks. I am also trying to get into running so that’s another way to get my steps in. I track my steps with my apple watch.
Taralynn McNitt says
You just join by posting and sharing your walk photos with the hashtag on instagram!:) Make sure to track your miles and reach 150 miles by the end of the month for a chance to win the box!
Michelle says
I’m in! My company is sending me to Seattle for the month of June so I hope I can get them in while exploring the Emerald City (when I’m not at work!). My goal will be to hit 5 miles every day. And, not related, to try a new coffee place every day!
Taralynn McNitt says
Oh that’ll be awesome and a great reason to get out and walk!!
Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog says
I don’t know if I can fit 5 miles into my day with a full time job, but I’ll definitely take longer routes to work daily to up my step intake! 🙂
Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog

Taralynn McNitt says
Every step counts! You don’t have to hit five miles 🙂 Gotta customize it. My friend becca works 9-6:30 and she is going to walk two in the morning, one during lunch, and two after work
Teresa Askew says
I would love to join the challenge with you. You are a great inspiration. Sometimes taking time off is the best thing we can do for our well being.
I plan on mixing light running with walking. I am nursing a hamstring injury so joining this walking challenge will encourage me to slow down and enjoy being active without pressure.
I will get in the miles with early morning walks with my dog Ginger.
Taralynn McNitt says
I totally agree! I haven’t been to the gym in two weeks and I feel AMAZING!!!!
🙂 I bet Ginger will love the walks!
Liz says
Hi Taralynn! I love this idea and I’m definitely up for the challenge! I’m from New Zealand and we’re going into winter in June – so I definitely need the motivation to get outdoors. Luckily I have a big dog ? who needs lots of walking so he’s going to help me stick to the challenge! My goal is to hit a minimum of 10,000 steps a day for June and also to do “junk free June” and eliminate some of my unhealthy study snacks (I’m looking at you, cookies!) thanks for the constant inspiration and motivation, Taralynn!!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Having a dog makes the walks so much easier to do! They LOVE it. I have to get mine walked early morning or it’ll be too hot.
You will totally conquer your goals! I have no doubt! xo
Mirna says
yaay…… always for long walks and skates, running is not my cup of tea, so I am definitely in.
I am trying to lose some weight (around 20 lb) and also trying not to be too harsh with my body, so extra activity without lots of struggle is great.
xo
Taralynn McNitt says
Walking is my favorite for weight loss and I’ve been more successful losing weight by walking in the past than any other fitness routine!
Brit says
IN!
Taralynn McNitt says
Great!
Carly says
I’m SO excited for this challenge! So is my dog Moose since most of my miles will be with him! I’m ready for the challenge of 5 miles a day, and plan to count walking/running specific miles only. I have a fitbit to track my miles but sometimes it can be misleading because doing things like folding laundry gets you steps even though your not actually going any distance! I plan to hit at least 5 miles a day… hoping for more exercise sake! My plan is two long walks with Moose and hikes on the weekends! Cant wait for June 1!
Taralynn McNitt says
Moose will love it!!!!
Can’t wait to follow your challenge posts!!
Jana Nelson says
Omg! I love this timing so much!! I was going to do this anyways! Count me in!
Taralynn McNitt says
Glad you’re in!!
Jana Nelson says
To get to 5 walking miles day, how do you want us to check in daily? If we send you pictures, you’ll probably get a lot of repeated lookalike photos. Also is it all it all of your steps in a day? Or 5 miles of workout walking? Does that make sense?
Tammy says
I wish I could join. I haven’t been able to exercise in three years because of chronic illness.
Taralynn McNitt says
So sorry to hear that! Keep pushing forward! xo
Hannah says
IN IN IN! LOVE that it’s walking!
Taralynn McNitt says
Walking is my favorite!
Shannen says
I’m in! ??
My goal is just to complete 150 miles.. but if I happened to lose some weight in the process, I wouldn’t be upset!
Most of my mules will probably come from walking my dogs or walking with my sister. I’m excited for an easier challenge that still gets us moving!
Taralynn McNitt says
Happy you’re in, Shannen!
I love that this challenge is EASY, but totally something you have to dedicate yourself too and it can be done anytime and anywhere!
Zully Hernandez says
I definitely want to try this challenge this month! Walking more is part of my goals and I’m going to try doing 5 miles a day, too. My goal is to get them done early in the morning. If I can walk my daughter to school I will, but the difference will either be done by the lake nearby or on a treadmill if it’s too hot. Is your Runkeeper profile public? If so, what’s your username or profile link?
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi Zully!
I don’t keep my RunKeeper public because it has my location, neighborhood, and trails with it. I will share all of my stats and screenshots from the walk just like I do with my running 🙂 Walking your daughter to school will be great for getting in those extra steps!!
Julie says
I need to do this!! Any recommendations for just getting started? I find it so difficult to get the motivation to exercise sometimes but NEED to start as I’m super tired all the time and just don’t feel my best ?
Taralynn McNitt says
Well the good thing about this one is you can do it anywhere. Just put on your shoes, head out for half the walk, and then do it later in the day! You’ll start a routine and eventually love it!
Leighann says
I am so in!! I was just thinking about your challenge last summer and was looking into doing something similar. I like that this is pretty simple, and totally doable. This is exactly what I need-I try to do things but make them so complicated that I never do it. I can’t wait to get started!
I’ve also been seeing results eating keto-style for the past few weeks, and I’m so excited about my progress. Thanks for sharing your challenge! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Glad you’re in! I wanted it to be simple and relaxing! I’ll most likely do a harder one next month!
Hannah says
I love this challenge & I’m definitely in!!! This is just the motivation I need, & is the perfect workout for my fiance & I to do together! We’re both nurses & work opposite shifts (which can be pretty tiring), so a lower impact exercise like walking will be great! Also, it’s a great way for both of us to get a little more active before the wedding! 🙂 Super excited!!!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is great that you guys can do it together! 🙂 Glad you’re doing it!
hails says
in!
Taralynn McNitt says
awesome!
Christina says
I’m definitely in! I’ve been doing Weight Watchers for about a month and have been steadily losing weight thanks to it and walking every night. I’m eager to up my miles with this challenge! I also just read your marathon blog. Congrats on finishing despite your runner’s knee! Reading it was a huge inspiration, specifically the part when you said when you were in school you’d skip out on running the mile. And how you lost your weight years ago by walking. I’ve always wanted to run a 5k but have never really liked running. Reading your post makes me think maybe one day I can get there!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Christina! Glad you’re in! 🙂
Nice job on your commitment to walking and your journey. I remember not being able to run for one minute and I NEVER thought I’d be able to run a half marathon. If you take baby steps and mentally train as well, you’ll totally get to that goal!!! If you read my “how I got into running post” you can see how I ran my first 5k too.
Brooklyn says
I find walking to be so therapeutic for me.
I’ve been going on lots of long walks lately before the weather gets too hot here (I’m basically melting as I type this) and I’m always so happy afterwards!

Taralynn McNitt says
Me too, girl! Me too! Ive already taken three walks today! Gotta love the pups lol
Hallie says
I’m in!! Being injured for over two months has made me feel so down and being challenged to just walk 5 miles a day, so easy, freeing, and good for you! 🙂
I would like to do more than 150 miles, but 5 miles a day is absolute least.
I want to love the way I look and be happy & healthy!
Taralynn McNitt says
Being injured stinks, but there is always something you can do! 5 miles is such a great goal and easy to attain. I want that too! Great goal! 🙂
Vanessa naidoo says
Count me in too! Love being a witness to your journey, your travels and eating posts! I love your design style posts! I totally understand your anxieties as I have always had such issues myself!
Taralynn McNitt says
Yay!!! Glad you’re in & thank you for all of the kind words!!
Vanessa naidoo says
Will do 2.5 in the am and complete 2.5 in afternoon after work. I have a Fitbit but I will look up run keeper. Goal is to lose weight and increase my exercise time without fatiguing my adrenal system

That is what I am going to try to do! Morning with pups and evening with pups!!

I’m in! I’m so excited for this challenge. I’ve been trying to get back into running but the heat this summer is making it difficult (100F in Arizona). I think even just walking the five miles a day is a good goal for me. I’ll probably try walking half in the morning before it gets too hot and the other half in the evening. There are some nice trails near my house that I want to do but haven’t had the chance yet. This is the perfect opportunity!
Taralynn McNitt says
YAY! Glad you’re in.
I remember trying to run in Arizona. IT WAS SO HOT! I think breaking it up is the best! Hope to see your posts from your Arizona walk! I miss the AZ sunsets!
Orsi says
Hi Tara, I am in! This is a fantastic goal for this month. We are planning to hike Havasu Falls, which is 21 miles round trip haha so I was going to train for it anyway and this is a perfect timing! Hope all is well!
Taralynn McNitt says
Glad you’re in! THAT is an intense hike! Does that take you two days?!! Or do you do it all in one? Crazy! xo
Orsi says
Well, we will have to do it in one day. The camp ground was already full for the entire year when I called in April, so we have no options but hike in and hike out 😀
Taralynn McNitt says
OMG! that is intense. Let me know how it goes!!
Orsi says
Will do!! If I make it bwhaha
Leilani says
I’m in! I’ve been walking to work everyday for months but I broke my toe recently, missed the half I was going to do because of that, and am moving to Arizona so I need something to help keep me on track!
Brittnie says
I’m in! My main goal, is just to be active again! I bartend, and even though I’m moving a TON (like 12,000 steps in a shift) I don’t feel active! I’m going to get up earlier and walk before I have to work. Yay! Thanks for being awesome!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is awesome! Holy cow. Bartending burns so many calories and gets you moving non-stop! You’ll probably hit 5 miles by the end of the night! Excited for you to join! xo
Katherine says
I’m in! I am about three weeks in to a lifestyle overhaul– after eight years of bartending I’m ready to drop the bad habits I’ve acquired: gained a ton of weight, bad food choices, too much drinking and smoking. My goal for June is to get to the gym four days a week, start my day with long early morning walks and hopefully be done smoking completely by the end of the month!
I’m lucky that for the first time in awhile I have friends who will support my changes instead of enabling the bad habits!
Taralynn McNitt says
Good for you for making changes and reaching for a healthier lifestyle. WE ALL go through hard times and different phases. Happens to the best of us! My friend Becca has been two years smoke-free and she’s never felt better! You should check out our hiking post from last year where we talk about it! It’s so great you have friends to support you. That is so important.
Emily Ashton says
I’m in! We just moved and no longer have a yard for our dogs so it will be a great way to encourage more walks for them!
Taralynn McNitt says
The pups will love it!
jordan @ dancing for donuts says
I love the idea of this SO much!! I’ve recently gotten super into walking as a way to break up gym workouts and as a form of therapy, honestly! i listen to my audiobooks/podcasts, and it’s so relaxing. I usually do a 30 minute walk at lunch to get out of the office, but taking a walk after dinner sounds lovely, too. Maybe a short one in the morning to get the blood flowing, if I can swing it!
Taralynn McNitt says
I love that you also do walking for therapy!:) It’s been my best medicine for anxiety!
Jenny says
Yes! This came at a perfect time for me. I was just telling my husband that I need to amp up my fitness program. And my rat terrier, Rover, will happily walk with me some days.
Taralynn McNitt says
Yes the pup will love this challenge as well 🙂
Anonymous says
I think my mom and I will join in! I’m going to Disney World for the first time (YAY!!) In February and I’ve heard it’s a LOT of walking so I want to be prepared so I’m not sore and suffering every night! I have not been doing any sort of exercise lately so I think this will help get me going. Thanks for the kick in the butt!
Taralynn McNitt says
SO MUCH WALKING! Definitely prepare yourself for it 🙂
Jane says
LETS DO THIS
Taralynn McNitt says
wooo!!!
Samantha Staffa says
I’m in!
I am just wanting to be sure I am being active every single day to take advantage of the summer weather! I plan to walk the pup daily down the twisty trails we just found behind our apartment! I also plan to start taking my 30 minute breaks at work to get some miles in! Is there any where we need to post or follow for this challenge?
Thanks! Hope Hawaii was lovely!
Taralynn McNitt says
YAY!!
Trails are perfect for this! I think just tag me in your miles and your walking post on the fitness instagram 🙂 I have a hashtag and tag above! 🙂
Jennifer S. says
Yes, I’m up for the challenge! My daughter-in-law already committed to doing it with you and asked me to join her. I’ve made excuses lately and walk less or not at all sometimes. I plan to get back to walking a mapped 5 mile square my husband and I used to do every day. My goal is to live more healthy, move better, and lose a little of the weight I’ve gained back.
Taralynn McNitt says
YAY! So glad you two are joining! 🙂 I think we all go through the excuse periods and I know I’m guilty of it too! You have amazing goals and I have no doubt you two can achieve them together!! Walking is the best for weight loss! Easy on the joints and a stress reliever.
Kailie Nations says
I love this idea! I plan on splitting up the 5 miles per day and bringing my old pup with me in the evenings. I’ve fallen into a bit of a fitness rut trying to keep up with school and my two kids, so I think this will help bring me out of it! Thanks for the motivation! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
This will be great! & something the kids and pup can do with you!
Paige says
Just downloaded the app-I’m going for it! I’ve been looking for accountability to stay active this summer so this is a perfect start!
Taralynn McNitt says
YAY!!!
Michelle says
I’m in – sounds fun! I`ll aim to walk before work and, on the weekend, to the Farmers`s Market and back with my bounty!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is great!
Joanne says
I’m in! I love challenges to help get me moving. I’m also planning on taking part in the Runner’s World Run Streak, so I think these two will fit nicely together! I’m excited to see if I can do it 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Yes! That’ll be awesome!:) Great goal!
Rachel says
I love the idea behind this! It’s so inspiring and a great way to get everyone out and active, it’s amazing how just being out in the fresh air can make you feel so good.
I’m going to take part! I already do a lot of walking too and from work so instead I think I’ll count running miles, that’ll also help me train for my first 15km event in July!
Coffee & Avocados
Taralynn McNitt says
I totally agree about just being out and walking. I did three miles this morning with the dog and when I came in for coffee, I was so relaxed!
Can’t wait to see your progress!
Lindsey says
I’m in!! I work in a cubicle setting and can’t really get up and move around much during the day. Walking in the evenings is such a stress reliever and helps with anxiety. I just put on a good playlist and can easily get a nice, long walk in. Love this challenge idea! Yay!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Glad you’re up for it!!! TOTALLY a stress and anxiety reliever. Helps me a lot! And you’re right about adding music! XO
Dorothy says
This is just what I needed! My husband was just telling me that he wants to start getting more active this summer. I am a runner and he wants to work up to that.
So we’ll be in!
My goals are to get in 5 miles every day, with at least 1 of those miles being a run!
I plan to do 2.5 in the morning and 2.5 in the evening. I’ll bring my husband, the baby, and the dogs with me to make it a family event!
Taralynn McNitt says
YAY! So glad you two are going to join!
Love that you’re going to incorporate your running miles in! It’ll be great for family bonding and a great way to get active together!!
Dany says
I’ll definitely join! But I’ll be both running and walking. I actually want to get back on running this summer since I want to join my college’s athletism team! I’m not sure if I’ll be crushing the 5 miles a day but I totally want to contribute for the 10,000 mile goal. 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Sounds great!! Anything to contribute would be awesome!!
Jen says
This challenge might be just the kick in the rear I need to get me back into a fitness routine. I switched jobs 3 years ago and have gained over 50 lbs (!) since I started. I technically need to lose 90-100 lbs, but getting started is half the battle. I’m going to aim for the 150 in June, but if nothing else, the commitment to walk every day will help ease me back into the conditioning. 🙂 Thanks for the challenge!
Taralynn McNitt says
Walking is the best for weight loss when you don’t know where to start. I usually find that walking is the best thing for weight loss for my body. It’s the only thing I’ve ever had success with. If you eat healthy and get out there and walk, you’ll feel better! You got this girl!
Jackie says
After being super strict with bodybuilding for over a year, my mind is in need of some exercise that doesn’t become obsessive. I came from eating disorders and with tracking every morsel in and every calorie out I find the same behaviors manifesting in different ways. I want healthy balance! I hate cardio, but looking at walking as an opportunity to listen to audio books and podcasts and things makes it sound more relaxing and less torturous! I am IN for this challenge!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is how I feel, but with running. I promise once you start walking long distance every day, you’ll never want to go back and you’ll LOVE the way you feel!!! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts when the challenge is over!! xo xo Glad you’re taking care of yourself.
Savannah says
Yes, I AM up for the challenge. This is something I have been searching for! My goals for this challenge is to finish the challenge with 5 miles each day. I’ve had 3 knee surgeries but want to be king to my body since summer is here and just to be outside more. Plus my dog, Roxy will love this even more. Since June in Ohio can be either really hot or rainy, I am going to split up the miles. I will do 2.5 miles in the morning and then 2.5 in the evening either outside, at my local track, or on the trails. Can’t wait for this, I may just start a day early to get my feet wet. Thanks for the inspo!
Taralynn McNitt says
Wow! Sorry about all of your knee troubles. I can’t imagine 🙁 Glad you’re up for the challenge and Roxy is probably so excited!
Jamie says
I am in! This is a great idea 🙂 I have already lost a lot of weight over the past 2 years and I want to continue that positive momentum. I will try to walk in the morning and during my lunch break at work. 150 miles here I come!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is awesome! Great way to take advantage of lunch breaks!
Julia B says
Definitely joining! This sounds awesome and a great addition to my summer workout plan!
Taralynn McNitt says
Great!
Roy Wilford Belzer IV says
I absolutely can’t wait to do this challenge! I’ve been in a bit of a shlump with my health lately, so I feel like this is going to e an incredible way to jumpstart it again. Especially because walking the streets of Chicago is something I love doing anyway!
Taralynn McNitt says
YAY!! Glad you’re in ROY!:):) You can always come to the Carolinas and walk too! MISS YOU & I need to get ahold of you when I visit Chicago this summer! xo
Laura says
I think I’m gonna attempt to do this! I’m terrified about not completing the 150 miles because it’s something I would love to accomplish and I’m even more terrified about trying to fit the miles into my day. I can’t spread out the miles as much as I would like to because I am a SWEATER and that’s not easy to maintain haha. Buttt I want to try. I really want a healthier lifestyle and this would force me to get up and WALK. When I was younger I always thought of walking as lesser than running but as I got older I valued it more; walking is better than nothing, walking is a great contribution to my health, and walking these miles everyday will help jump start an active lifestyle(one I desperately want and need)! I’m nervous that we begin tomorrow but I hope to hold up to the challenge!
Taralynn McNitt says
Oh don’t be afraid! If you don’t fit them in, it’s no big deal! Walking once mile a day is still better than no miles a day! IF you want, just change up the mileage! 🙂 Don’t get upset if you can’t complete it because there is always next month! Maybe do some in the morning and some at night!
Anonymous says
I am so in! I live in Australia so will be doing 5kms a day! Thanks for starting this, need some motivation:)
Taralynn McNitt says
GREAT!! 🙂
Catherine says
I’m definitely in! I started serving again at a busy local summertime restaurant so if I don’t hit 150 miles, there is something wrong haha
I’m excited!!
Taralynn McNitt says
LOL you’ll have NO PROBLEM hitting those miles!!
Jen says
Yes I’m definitely up for the challenge! I’ve never been a runner, but long walks are everything.
My goal is to walk 12,000 steps each day. Even 10k can be a challenge because I have a desk job that I’m at 8 hours a day, but I’m motivated 🙂
I use my lunch hour to walk every day and I will try to find time in the morning to get a walk in to start the day right and set my mind towards the goal. I’m also going to make it a point to find some new trails to walk to keep it interesting!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is awesome! Using your lunch hour will help!! Becca and I plan on trying out new trails too.
Elizabeth Whitehill says
My sister, husband and I will be attempting this challenge!
Taralynn McNitt says
Awesome!!
Brandy H. says
Yes! I am in! I am sure my dog will appreciate the extra walk/miles!!!

I’m up for the challenge! I feel like this is a great kick-start for Summer 🙂
I usually walk to and from work and then I’ll go for an evening walk to get the last couple of miles
Taralynn McNitt says
Perfect to kick off the summer!
Allie @ Running on Peanut Butter says
Ahhh yes, I am SO in for this challenge!! It will definitely encourage me to get outside and enjoy as much nice weather as possible! Do you plan on using an app to track your mileage, or just your trusty notebook or iphone?
Taralynn McNitt says
I use Runkeeper! & I’ll be sharing my daily miles on the instagram page 🙂
Anna says
I am up to the challenge and I am going to use my mornings to get the walking in because I need a reason and a goal to get up earlier!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Awesome!
Austyn Combs says
I want in! I need a way to be active after having a baby and putting on weight. This sounds like a great challenge to keep me accountable!
Taralynn McNitt says
It’s an easy and light one too! 🙂
Jennifer says
This is an awesome challenge! I’m so ready to get on it starting tomorrow morning!
I was training for a half marathon the same time as you, and ran mine the week after yours. I finished my training/race with some wicked shin splints, so I have to take a break from running too!
Thanks for this thoughtful challenge! And my dogs thank you too 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Glad you’re taking a break, but awesome job on completing!!! xo xo
Kaylee says
Yay I will be joining! This is a great, realistic goal to work towards starting tomorrow 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
yay!!
Amber says
I know you’ve talked about this before, I just wouldn’t know where! When you started losing weight back in 2010, how many miles were you trying to average a day or week?
Thanks so much, I’m excited for this!
Amber
Taralynn McNitt says
About 4-6 miles a day, but eating a very clean diet along with it! 🙂
Amber says
Thank you! Also, this is maybe a little far fetched, but I think it would be cool if you did a little flashback post to when you started your journey? Just recapping us all about your typical meals, how long it took you to get to goal, walking miles, etc. just an idea!!
Chloe Rohovit says
I’m in! It sounds so fun and like something that will really get me moving in the morning! Super excited ?
Taralynn McNitt says
CAN’T WAIT!
Mel says
Do we have to complete 5 miles of exercise-type walking/running, or will my steps/miles from my day-to-day activities count, too? Excited to do this! Hope I can keep up! 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Just five miles a day!:) if you want them to be exercise miles only, that is up to you!
Elizabeth says
Oh, I am so totally in on this! A short challenge that will hopefully kickstart my fitness goals! And, I just plotted an around-the-neighboorhood route that works out to 5.25 miles! I’m in! And, full disclosure, I bought the same purple Asics shoes that you love so much! Very comfortable!
Taralynn McNitt says
Asics are the best!!:)
Melanie says
I’m in! I’ve been trying to ease back in to working out since having a baby and this sounds like a great way to start. I’ll be bringing my son and pup with me too, I’m so excited!
Taralynn McNitt says
Team work!:) Can’t wait to see how you do! xo Congrats on your baby! so exciting!
Hope says
I would like to join in the challenge too, by doing what I can at this point. I think I can go for 2 miles per day on workdays, in the morning, evening and during lunch break. Then hopefully 3 miles each weekend day (all contributing to the total 10K).
I need the accountability:) This would be way better than what I am (not) doing now.
Taralynn McNitt says
Thats great!:) 2 miles is better than no miles! Glad you’re in!!
Hope says
Yes, I want to join!
Sorry I wrote a previous comment but I don’t see it..not sure if it will appear later?
Taralynn McNitt says
They go through moderation!::) I got it! Glad you’re in!
Kara says
I’m in! Got up alittle early and walked/jogged 1.5miles which is a start! Thanks for the inspiration and motivation!!
Taralynn McNitt says
GOOD FOR you! I did 2.5 with the pups today!
Nicole W. says
Hi Taralynn!
I’m definitely up for this challenge!!!
My goals are to focus on reaching my 5 miles each and everyday, and to focus on my eating habits a little closer!
I usually will go for a walk before work and get 2.5 miles in, I’ll just start taking an evening 2.5 after also!
Taralynn McNitt says
Great!
Elizabeth says
Hi Taralynn,
What a great idea! I have been procrastinating on exercising, and a 30-day challenge is just what I need to kickstart getting back into a fitness routine! I plotted a course in my neighboorhood yesterday, and it works out to 5.2 miles! I did my first walk this morning…hurray! There are lots of hills in my neighboorhood, and I was breathing hard. It was NOT easy! Since I am just getting back into exercising, I am not going to judge myself on how long it took me, or how fast or slow I go. I’m just going to keep recording my exercise and see how much I improve by the end of the month!
Thanks for thinking of this challenge! Can’t wait for the next one!
Taralynn McNitt says
That is the perfect roue! The hills will just make you stronger 😉 Mine is VERY hilly too!!! The distance matters, not the speed!
Amber says
GOT MY FIVE MILES IN TODAY!
Taralynn McNitt says
nice job!!
aubrey m. says
So how do we actually “join” the challenge? It’s June 1st and I can’t wait to get started!
Taralynn McNitt says
Just by sharing your walking stats on social media with the tag and hashtag above!:) I’ll keep my eye out for the stats and for completers!:)
Kealy says
A 30-day challenge is such a great idea! Im struggling to get workouts in while finishing grad school and running the household with my new husband, so this is a great beginning for me. I’m about 2 miles in already today and thats with a short walk with my pup around the block. I’m sure my dog will NOT protest my challenge since he will get more walks. Pup and I will get up earlier than normal everyday to squeeze in a walk because at the end of the day, Im barely functioning. I’m really excited about the accountability since I have a terrible habit of bowing out of challenges when Im halfway through.
Jillian says
Are you up for the challenge?
I am definitely ready, and I’m sure my two dogs will enjoy the change of pace.
If you plan on joining me, what are your goals?
I want to refocus on my diet and exercise plan, as well as work to set boundaries with work and take time for myself.
How do you plan on fitting in 5 miles a day?
My friends/coworkers and I are planning to walk half during our lunch hour and half after work at home. I’m planning to take both my pups along for the evening miles. I’ll also be tracking my steps/miles with my Fitbit+app.
Jamie says
1. I’m down! The other challenges looked great, but were too intimidating for me to commit to. I think this one is totally doable but still a challenge.
2. Still working (slowly) on losing weight and getting toned for summer.
3. I just started using my FitBit again, so I will use that to help me keep track.
Harriet says
Yay finally got internet connection, so now I can catch up on your last 3 posts.
Definitely up for the challenge! I have just signed up for my first half marathon that’s only 5 months away. So I am going to do the challenge to help with my training. As I it’s now winter in Nz I am going to to 2.5 on the treadmill in the morning then do the other 2.5 at lunch or after work once the day have warmed up..
Autumn says
Can I still join?!
Taralynn McNitt says
YES!:) OF COURSE!
Khrissy says
My best friend and I are doing the walking challenge! Walked the dogs and got 5 miles today!
Taralynn McNitt says
NICE JOB!:)
Demi Gekas says
Taralynn, could you post your music playlist that you listen to while walking/running? Also, I recently started on my health kick and have been not eating out as much. Also, I’ve been going to WERQ, Strictly Abs, and Hip hop class at the YMCA to help get into shape and also to have fun. What app do you use to track your miles that you walk?
Kelsey says
I think I’m going to attempt something like this for the month of May! I may only aim for 3 miles a day because I don’t think I have the time to devote to a full 5 each day (I have 4 jobs plus a yoga practice I am dedicated to). THANK YOU for the idea! I think it’s very manageable and a great way to be active as the weather warms up in the Mid-Atlantic region! How did it work out for you last year?
