Good morning and happy Monday! Now that we are finally settling into the new home and the move is over with, I’m ready to get back to my regular posting schedule. That means MONDAY recap posts and more recipes. This past week flew by, and we managed to get so much done. I’m looking forward to the mini home posts with details on all of our projects. I’ve been sharing sneak peeks on the Cottage Story account, but can’t wait to go into detail and keep it organized on the blog. It’s been enjoyable adding a new line of content, and I’m shocked to see the excitement over gardening and home updates. Don’t worry; I’ll keep sharing food and daily life blogs!
The new content is just added fun. Let’s get this recap started, and I’ll fill you in on what I’ve been up to!
I decided to start my Monday morning with a bowl of Cheerios with raspberries and blueberries. I about fell over when I saw 2 pints for $4 at Publix yesterday. I had to pick up a ton, especially since we finally had our fridge delivered. I’ll eventually stop talking about this house, but it’s all so new and exciting right now. This is going to sound so silly, but waking up here is so much better. My townhome was a lot darker, and with the sun beaming through the windows here, it just puts me in such a happy and bright mood.
On Monday, Kyle and I worked on unpacking. We wanted to make sure everything was put away by the end of the week. Monday truly was a blur because we were running all over the place to get things done.
We ended the night with salads from Chopt and Cappello’s grain-free pizza. Cappello’s is hands down the best pizza from a box. I’m not supposed to eat cheese and scraped it off the best I could, but I’d disobey the doctor for this! I have a feeling I’ll get flooded with questions about why I “can’t” eat cheese, but it was recommended by my doctor to help with endometriosis pain. Cheese doesn’t make me bloat or uncomfortable, and I’m not lactose (that I know of), but I still stay away from dairy whenever I can.
My chopt salad had kale, romaine, sweet potatoes, falafel, brussels sprouts, avocado, cranberries, cucumber, tomatoes, hard-boiled eggs, and a house balsamic vinaigrette. It’s always my go-to!
We had most of the lights installed on Tuesday. Remember when I mentioned that Kichler was providing the lights for our home? Well, they’re looking so good. I will be doing a separate post with ALL the lighting details throughout the house. It has transformed the spaces!
We still didn’t have our fridge here (just a mini one in the garage), so I had some leftover Chopt salad with sparkling water for breakfast. I’ve been waking up at 5 am, so breakfast time feels like lunch.
I spent ALL day outside planting while the lights were being installed. I finished up a big garden bed in the front, along with a fun bulb planting project. I picked up some bags from Lowes. I’ve heard that people haven’t had much luck planting Lowe’s bulbs, but I’m going to give it a try anyway! I’m taking one for the team I suppose 😂 I do have Peony roots coming from Robertas Garden this week! I cannot wait. I need to get those in the ground immediately. I had a ton of people asking about my collapsible gardening toolset on Instagram. I’m linking it HERE if you’re interested. I do LOVE it. I will say the shovel is a little flimsy, but the rest of the tools are perfect for yard work around the house. Whenever I’m deadheading a plant or cutting a bush, I just put the pieces in the middle and transfer them to the trash.
We picked up sushi for dinner on Tuesday night and finished a few more episodes of Outer Banks! I’m really into this show right now! For sushi, we always order the spicy tuna and spicy salmon with gluten-free chicken lettuce wraps. Akahana is our favorite spot in Fort Mill.
I was up bright and early on Wednesday. The sun rises in our backyard, so waking up to the natural sunlight is a game-changer. At night, watching the airplanes fly by in the sky helps me fall asleep. It’s kind of like counting sheep.
I had my coffee, and then Kyle and I headed to the old house to grab a few things, touch up holes, paint, and clean before closing on Thursday morning.
After spending hours cleaning and touching up paint, we stopped at Firehouse subs to get a quick lunch. There’s nothing worse than cleaning when you’re super hungry. I had their tuna salad over their house salad and a bag of jalapeno chips! 😋
We ended up finishing late afternoon and said farewell! It was a bittersweet moment.
I had avocado toast for dinner. It had two toasted slices of gluten-free bread, earth balance vegan butter, mashed avocado on top, and everything but the bagel seasoning. 😋 This is another excellent go-to when you don’t have a refrigerator!
We had our stair runner and our washer and dryer delivered on Thursday! I was so excited for the stair runner because my older dog, Grumples, couldn’t get up and down the stairs. He was so afraid, and I didn’t want him to fall. It was a main priority for the house! I went with a taupe herringbone pattern, and I love how it turned out. I was also excited to have the washer and dryer here! The laundry room is going to be such a fun project to do!
For dinner, we ordered Hobo’s salads. I used to go here all the time with Becca and order the same thing. This had chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, egg, candied pecans, and avocado! 😋 The best part about Hobo’s is the prices for the quality of food. This salad was only $10.
On Friday, Kyle and I finished unpacking ALL the boxes. It felt SO good to get it all done. Having the house clutter-free made my heart so happy. After looking around and seeing all the space, we decided to keep our home pretty minimal. We don’t want to clutter it up with extra furniture but do things like painting, wallpaper, and light fixtures to give it style. I just feel so much better with less stuff. But I will be getting my new rugs and barstools! 😊
Ignore how tired and scary I look in this photo, and the fact that a roll of toilet paper is holding up our toothbrushes, but I did get a few new outfits from Loft in the mail. Just so you know they’re having a 40 to 60% off sale. Loft is my FAVORITE store and they have a ton of eyelet and linen options (both my favorite.)I’ll try to do a mini try on haul later this afternoon! Oh, and I’m starting that Poshmark 😊
I finally tried the cheese everyone has been talking about from Good Foods. I was shocked because it was delicious! But, I will say the cashew queso from Fresh Cravings is still better 😊
I picked this up at Target on Tuesday.
Something really scary happened to me at Target in the middle of the day on Tuesday and I’m going to make a post or some kind of video talking about it. I think it’s really important to address, and I can’t just let it go. I need to spend an afternoon putting what happened into words, and I’m still in a bit of shock. Long story short, but I was being stalked by two men for a good hour. My adrenaline was in full force and it took me a while to come up with a plan on how I was going to get out of the situation, but it could have ended a lot worse. I think it’s so important to share and talk about, but I need to do it at a time where I can go into that headspace and share my experience. But for now, please please be careful when going to stores alone and it doesn’t matter what day or what time it is. It was in the middle of the day on a Tuesday, I wasn’t wearing any makeup, my hair hadn’t been brushed, I wasn’t dressed up, and I didn’t stand out. But none of that mattered because I was somehow still a Target. I wasn’t going to bring it up or talk about what happened, but I feel as if that would be a disservice to my audience. It could have been anyone. Just PLEASE pay attention to your surroundings no matter what. And I have to mention that I’m incredibly impressed with Target’s response to what was happening. They had the situation under control within minutes.
There’s no easy way to transition on a blog after sharing that, so I won’t even try.
I took the dogs out for their miles on Friday afternoon, and I think they love all the new streets and smells. At first, they were scared of everything, but now they love it.
For lunch, we made a Cappello’s gluten-free almond flour spinach and caramelized onion pizza. It tasted like the Applebees spinach and artichoke dip. Again, THE BEST pizza from a box! 😋 Whenever I make it to Wholefoods (wow, it’s been four months!), I am going to pick up as many boxes as I can.
Oh, and our fridge was delivered on Friday! 😀
For dinner, we had our ALL-TIME FAVORITE breakfast sandwich. We’ve been having a ton of these lately.
It’s toasted gluten-free bread with vegan butter, mashed avocado, everything but the bagel seasoning, Applegate maple chicken sausage, and a fried egg on top. You HAVE to try it.
I spent Saturday morning catching up on laundry, organizing the pantry, and planting a few new rose bushes on the side of the house.
My hydrangeas are LOVING the backyard. They get their morning sun and shade the rest of the day. I love the color! I planted pink (I’ll feed them with lime to help them keep their color), purple, and white! I also have two white Azealia bushes planted in the back with them. Once we get our fence up on Saturday, I’m going to plant some azaleas along the edges. If you have any other favorite privacy bushes you love, let me know! I just don’t want anything with pines.
For lunch on Saturday, we had that favorite breakfast sandwich! 😋 I think I know what I’m having for lunch today!
I’m back on my Matcha latte game! I love making my own iced matcha lattes vs the Starbucks one because theirs are full of sugar, like 32g to be exact! For mine, I mix together 1 tbsp of unsweetened ceremonial grade matcha with unsweetened almond milk and stevia! It tastes the EXACT same without all the extra sugar. I’ve been doing this in the afternoons when I need a pick-me-up!
And then sometimes I eat like a five-year-old for lunch 😂 I had gluten-free chicken nuggets and crinkled french fries with ketchup!
You know the boys feel at home when they’re finally stepping into the kitchen! They wouldn’t even go near it when we first moved in, not even for a treat!
We ordered Hobo’s again for dinner on Saturday night. I had the same salad, and Kyle ordered the buffalo chicken lettuce wrap. The food is always so good!
It only took a few days for my pink hydrangeas to come out! I’m hoping by this time next week my white ones will bloom.
This is going to sound so cheesy, but I look forward to the mornings walking around the house with my coffee checking up on the plants 😊 They just make me so happy.
Yesterday, the pulls I ordered from Amazon arrived! I’m finally getting them changed and I think they change up the whole look of the kitchen. The pulls we had are very pretty but didn’t fit the modern vibe we were going for. These pulls on Amazon are super inexpensive and they came in multiple sizes We are going to put them in the bathroom as well. I had a lot of people asking for the link to them on Instagram, so here it is! We finally filled up the fridge on Sunday! 😊
For lunch, I had a banana and pineapple spinach smoothie! It had unsweetened almond milk, frozen pineapples, frozen strawberries, vanilla plant-based protein powder, and spinach!
My hanging flower baskets arrived this weekend! I’m going to assemble them and Kyle is going to hang them for me today! I’ll make sure to post on Cottage Story once they’re up! By the way, I’ve been doing daily updates on that account, so make sure to give it a follow to stay up to date in real-time! 😊
After spending the evening chatting with our new neighbors, which I love and feel so grateful to live next to, I came inside and finished up cooking homemade mashed potatoes and turkey meatloaf. I am shooting the recipe this afternoon and that will be up this week! I do have several meatloaf recipes on the blog, but this is our GO-TO! The mashed potatoes had boiled red potatoes, unsweetened almond milk, vegan butter, sea salt, and black pepper.
YUM! We could eat this every single night.
We had a little side salad with onion and shallot vinaigrette for the dressing. We finished watching The Assistant, and then headed to bed!
It’s time for me to get up, walk the pups, and go finish another project! By the way, Kyle and I got rid of cable and I think that’s made all the difference in actually doing things around the house! I can’t believe how much more active I’ve been as well. You know me and my bad reality shows! 😂
My new Dahlias are almost open! 😊
Have an amazing week everyone and thank you for stopping by!
Questions for you!
- What is one recipe you could make for dinner every night and never get sick of it?
- I need a new coffee maker. Any recommendations?
- Any suggestions for privacy bushes that flower and stay green all year?

Hi Taralynn, I’ve loved following your new home’s instagram account! We bought our first home last June and I’ve been having fun planting flowers and creating new garden beds at my house as well. There’s no ideal time to move, it’s a big pain no matter what, but I’m sure you haven’t been too bored during the quarantine so far and have found plenty of things to keep you busy which is nice!
We just planted a Rhododendron bush and an Azalea bush. I think I’ve read those can get pretty tall and wide so could be a good privacy option? I’m anxious to see how they grow.
My fiance is a bit of a coffee snob and we got a Bonavita brand one touch coffee maker on Amazon. It’s made really nice coffee so far and has worked better than my old cheap coffee maker! There was something about the way the water pours over the coffee beans in this one that is supposed to be more of a pour over style? I’m sure I’m botching that description.
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Shannon!
I bet your gardens are gorgeous! I want rhododendron so bad but I think it may take a few years to get big! We’ll see!!!
I will have to check out the coffee maker. you can’t go wrong with pourover!
Lauren says
Hi Taralynn!
You’re house is so beautiful! I love seeing everything come together! Can’t wait for a vlog walk through 😊 that is SO scary about target, I am glad you are ok. Something similar happened to me at Costco when I was in college and I’m just thankful I pay attention to my surroundings.
I could make meatloaf everyday too, in fact we had turkey meatloaf last night for dinner too haha
Ps – I messaged you about the pumpkin protein balls and they turned out amazing! Love that Recipe 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Lauren!
SO HAPPY you loved the pumpkin spiced balls!! yay!
Yay for turkey meatloaf nights!
xo xo

Noooo please don‘t stop talking about the house, it‘s so much fun!!

Hi! I’m sorry for your incident at Target. It’s so unfortunate how common this is. Every time I’ve been followed it’s always been during the day. One thing I always tell women is to never be afraid to ask for help. I will ask male employees to walk me to my car, or call the police to escort me home. That seems drastic to some people but you only have to have one real scare before you start taking precaution. If you haven’t taken a self defense class, you should. My town offered one (I think it was $15) and it was worth it. It was run by two police officers that were also SWAT. They taught a lot of useful things. They also told us about something that was a last stitch effort to get away. It was intense but very worth it.
On another note, you give me major flower envy. Wish I had a green thumb and time to plant things!
Taralynn McNitt says
Love all of that advice, Kimberly! And you’re so right!

{What is one recipe you could make for dinner every night and never get sick of it?}
Probably grilled pizza 🤤 It’s so addictive and easy!
{I need a new coffee maker. Any recommendations?}
I have (and love) a DeLonghi combo brewer with an espresso machine! It’s stylish, counter top friendly, and it so easy! It steams milk and makes espresso, and has a warming area on top for your espresso glasses, as well as brews drip coffee like “normal.” I can give you a picture of my setup if you’re curious!
{Any suggestions for privacy bushes that flower and stay green all year?}
Heavenly Bamboo is absolutely stunning, but if your pups are going to have access to the area they are planted, I’d steer clear! Most berries from shrubs/bushes can be toxic to doggos 👎🏼
Eucalyptus has multiple varieties, as well! They don’t all flower, but it is a bush and is obviously gorgeous with the added benefit that you can use it for fresh arrangements inside to add some greenery! I have a small plant and just love it.
Taralynn McNitt says
Your coffee maker is my favorite. One of my friends had it at their house and OMG!!! I saw it on WS and it came it white 😮
We can’t grow bamboo in our neighborhood. I will definitely do a dog-friendly bush since it’s their backyard, but the good thing is my dogs never eat shrubs or flowers, just grass!
Catherine says
Hi Tara, if you are looking for a great place to buy bulbs and other plants, you should try a company called Dutch Gardens. They have great colorful plants and fun plants you can’t find in the store. They also send out a seasonal catalog that is just fun to look at!
Taralynn McNitt says
I’ll look into it!
THANK YOU!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Update: i just checked it out and OMG!! what a find! thank you!!!
Abbey says
Hi Taralynn! Congratulations on the move into the new house. Everything looks so beautiful!
For privacy foliage you could plant pitasporum (I’m sure that’s spelled wrong). They take a few years to get big but they have really nice green wavy leaves that stay shiny and green all year. Very low maintenance too! I also love jasmine for privacy if there is a fence where it can climb.
A recipe I could make every night? So hard! Probably Ina Garten’s skillet lemon chicken! Its so fancy looking but easy and makes even regular week nights feel special. 🙂
Hope you have a great week enjoying your home!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thanks so much 😊
I was thinking Jasmine too!!
You can’t go wrong with an Ina Garten recipe!!
xo xo thanks so much
Laura says
Congrats on your first week in your new home! Everything looks so pretty and I love seeing all the gardening you are doing.
We ditched cable when we moved too but we did supplement it with you tube TV which still gives us local stations and hgtv which I can’t live. We also have Netflix, and Amazon Prime, We spend about $60 a month which is a steal compared to the $200 we were quoted from the cable company. Crazy right? We have 4 TV’s and there was no way I was paying anything close to that (they wanted $40 just for cable boxs!!! LOL). How did you and Kyle do it? Did you just stick to Netflix/hulu/amazon (and the like) or did you supplement with a live TV service?
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Laura!
Thank you so much!
Our cable cost wasn’t too high, but it’s better to just ditch it for sure! We now just watch hulu, netflix, and amazon!
Madeline says
What is one recipe you could make for dinner every night and never get sick of it? Oh gosh that’s hard. Maybe grilled meat and vegetables during the summer. I know that’s not specific, but I love grilling dinner in the summertime. To be more specific, maybe your enchilada stuffed bell peppers with black beans, salsa and avocado on the side.
I need a new coffee maker. Any recommendations? I like plain black coffee so my Mr. Coffee coffeemaker is very simple and cheap. Nothing fancy, no espresso or steamed milk for me. On the weekends, I prefer French press.
Any suggestions for privacy bushes that flower and stay green all year? Azalea/rhododendron if you like pink! They might come in other colors, but pink is the most common on my neighborhood.
Taralynn McNitt says
I have to agree! Grilling in the summer is the best!!
Azaleas are so pretty!!! and I am thinking rhododendron too!
Emily B says
This sounds bad but I could probably eat pizza everyday and not get sick of it lol. Especially if I had different toppings and sauces each day! 🙂
I just have a Mr. Coffee and it works great! But I also don’t make anything other than plain coffee so I’m not much help beyond that!
That’s so scary about those two men. I’ve experienced a few similar things like that and am so glad I noticed it. Always always always trust your gut!! Even if I’m not sure about a situation but I just feel like something is wrong I just leave or do what I can to make myself safe. Im so glad that you caught onto the situation and that you are bringing it up on your blog. Talking about it is empowerment!
Taralynn McNitt says
Girl, I could eat pizza all day/everyday 😂
You’re right about trusting your gut for sure!!
Jaime says
We live in Dallas and planted Blue Point Junipers (trees) and Magnolias! The Junipers are nice because they are always green and no leaves falling everywhere. I love Magnolias because they smell so good!
Taralynn McNitt says
Great choices!
Cici says
Could you share the link of that striped dress from The Loft?? It is SO CUTE, but I couldn’t find it!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Cici!
Looks like it’s out of stock! 😞 Here’s the link! You can turn on notifications for when it comes back!

I’m glad you and your boys are feeling great in your peaceful new place. I’m dreaming about buying/building my first home soon. It must be a strange feeling to be surrounding by new, spotless objects. I’m curious about the stair runner, i’ve never seen one (it is not common in France and i do not find a translation). Does it have another purpose beside decoration ? Muffling sounds maybe ? It seems so cozy.
I’ve read that street harassement is increasing in broad daylight these days (isolated women with no possibility to fin help in empty streets). I hope you aren’t afraid to go out after what happened.
I could never get sick of pasta ! It is simple, confort food and it can be healthy. My second choice would be crêpes.
I love coffee but it makes me sick so i use instant decaf coffee.
I only have some herbs on my balcony for cooking (if my bunny doesn’t eat all).
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you 😊
Yes, the stair runner helps you with grip going up the steps. Your chances of falling go down for sure! My dogs are afraid of going up the stairs without the carpet, and since i don’t want all the steps carpeted, it is for decoration as well!
I’m not afraid at all, I’ve always been self-aware and cautious of my surroundings, but I’m glad it happened to me and someone who isn’t as observant. Just have to extra cautious!
♥️
Ohh I haven’t had crepes IN so long!
Leigh says
Camilla bushes. That’s what my parents have for there privacy bushes. In Nz the flower in the winter but might be more autumn time for you? And they’re green year round.
Taralynn McNitt says
I LOVE THEM! i’m hoping they’ll be able to grow fast here.
Jennifer Wedin says
Mexican Lasagna is such an easy go-to and I could eat it over and over and never get sick of it 🤤

So glad you are okay after the incident at Target! I’m glad they had your back! That sick feeling in the pit of your stomach when you know something isn’t right is something that you never forget and thank goodness you were aware and kept safe!!
You house posts are inspiring me big time, we built and moved in to our house in October 2018 and havent done much in the way of gardening at all, other than laying turf down. I am inspired to rethink my garden and maybe start to turn it into a happy place for me when this winter season in Australia is over!
Your new house is GORGEOUS, congratulations!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you 🙏
You are so sweet! I bet your house is so stunning and congrats on your build!

Gahhhh your home gives me such House envy!! I aspire to have a home like that someday. You are doing an absolutely beautiful job with it! And the FLOWERS. Girl!! I’m loving all of your gardening pics!
But most importantly, I just wanted to say I am so so glad that you are aware and alert while shopping! I literally have goosebumps and wanted to cry reading that. There are so many scary people in the world and it is absolutely astounding how common that kind of thing is. So so glad you are safe!!
Taralynn McNitt says
Awww thank you so so so much!!!
& yes, im just happy it didn’t happen to someone else!

The new house is amazing! It is so beautiful, and I love all of the landscaping you’ve done outside! Serious garden goals 😍 And it sounds like you guys are settling in already.
I’m getting ready to start the home buying process for the first time, and this gives me hope that we can find our dream house too! Any advice for First time buyers??
Taralynn McNitt says
Take the time to look around! Don’t rush into anything. Look for neighborhoods you WANT to live in, look at areas that will be an investment in the long run, and HAVE FUN!!
Kay says
I feel stupid but can you give the step by step process for making the green tea latte? It’s my fav sbux drink but I haven’t had it in yeeeears bc of the sugar.

I filmed it for an upcoming vlog and will for sure post it!!

I’m drooling over all of the food you posted! LOL. Congrats on getting everything settled in the house! So exciting!
And I’m glad you are okay after the Target experience. That sounds SCARY. You really can’t trust things these days 🙁

Thank you so much! 💜

Viburnum are beautiful, I planted snowball viburnum against our fence a few years back – in bloom now (hydrangea style white pom pom blooms in spring) and they are about 9′ tall now. Several varieties are evergreen.
I’ve had some luck with Lowe’s bulbs, usually the first year they aren’t super showy (especially the liatris, 2nd year is better). Throwing a little all purpose fertilizer in the hole with them will help.
Try Brent & Becky’s bulbs, Swan Island Dahlia and White Flower Farm for really healthy big bulbs/tubers that take off with a bang. Also David Austin Roses are the BEST. They bloom spring-fall, but look like peonies.
Your new house is beautiful, am really enjoying following along!
Taralynn McNitt says
Thank you so much, Tracy!! I’m in love with the snowball viburnum. I just need to find it here!

Hi Taralynn!
Just wanted to say I have been keeping up with your blog since almost day one and have loved reading it throughout the years! I am from Iowa and now moved to Kansas City so I loved your posts when you were back home to visit good ole’ Iowa haha. I LOVE the home posts, please keep them coming! My husband and I close May 14 on our first home and I have pretty much the same style as you; bright white, open and airy!
I’m so glad you’re gonna start a Poshmark! I’ve had one since college and love buying and selling. It’s so much better to buy secondhand anyway! It’s very time consuming getting all your listings up (pictures, verbiage) but I think it’s worth it.
If you have more decor and home styling posts coming up I will be here for it! Thanks for your blog and all it entails.
Love, Cassie
Taralynn McNitt says
AWW HI! 😊 & thank you!!!
Congrats on your home! That is so so so exciting!

Hi Taralynn,
I am also moving into a home being built in June in Charlotte and was wondering about your Hydrangeas. I absolutely love them, especially when they’re blue. BUT, I don’t exactly have a green thumb and have never planted flowers before (total newbie). I really wanted them in the front of the new house, but I hear conflicting messages that they should get sun and no sun at all. Yours look beautiful so was trying to get some insight, any help will be appreciated. 🙂
Taralynn McNitt says
Hi, Angie!
People are right. Make sure to plant your hydrangeas where the morning sun hits and it’s shade the rest of the day! That is why mine are in my backyard. The sun beats down on my house all day. Congrats on your house!!

Your flowers and new home are GORGEOUS! Just the inspiration I needed to start gardening at our new house. 🙂
We bought the Hamilton Beach 2 Way Coffee Maker a few months ago and have been loving it.
Above all, I am SO GLAD you are safe and that you were aware enough to notice those men. I am also so glad you shared your experience because I think sometimes we think it can’t happen to us when in reality, it can happen to anybody. <3
Taralynn McNitt says
Awww thanks, girl!
I saw that the coffee maker had pretty good reviews!
& you’re very right about that. 🙏 thank you.
